This paper discusses the use of parametric modeling and knowledge features for the complete vehicle assembly, as well as the international collaboration required to make the project a success. A GM/PACE sponsored global vehicle collaboration project involving thirteen schools from around the world has created the need for a robust, parametric method of modeling to allow rapid and accurate modifications to be made to all components of the vehicle. The chassis, in particular, requires a great deal of parametric integrity because it stands as a framework that must conform to the interface needs of all components which attach to it. In addition to interfacing with vehicle components, the chassis must also morph to fit a variety of different body designs created by the Industrial Design students. Apart from just creating a product, this project was intended to develop a process. It was our desire to explore the parametrics and knowledge based features available in NX, as well as the analysis and collaboration capabilities of other PACE tools, and come up with the most efficient and effective methodology for enhancing the vehicle design process. Using collaboration tools such as video conferencing and application sharing, we were able to span great distances to work as one unified team. We utilized advanced modeling techniques to integrate a great deal of intelligence into our models, and fused the components together using linked expressions and the wave functionality in NX. Knowledge Fusion was also implemented in order to link the parametric NX assembly to the alias models created by the Industrial Design students. This structure not only provided a seamless integration of assembly components, but it also offered a means by which the entire vehicle assembly could be easily modified based on a new set of input parameters. This capability was essential in order to conform to the different vehicle designs proposed by the Industrial design students.
