In order to realize efficient development, the concurrent development process between hardware and software should be adopted in place of the traditional development process, i.e., control logic is developed after the completion of the prototype engine. One of the most important methods for the efficient development is modelling. Many automotive companies and their suppliers carry forward the model-based development (MBD). The model consists of a controller model and a plant model. The controller model expresses the control logic using the bloc diagram and state transition diagram with the Simulink/Stateflow. It also leads to improving the controller performance and shortening the calibration time together with the model based control (MBC), which means the design of the control logic from the engine model, and for model-based calibration (MBC). In this paper, the authors discuss the concept of the MBD and show a current example of the concurrent development and the rapid modelling. To make the MBD more effective a framework should be developed to share parts models and system models between car companies and parts suppliers. This includes the construction of a development environment which clarifies the relationship among control, model and experimental data and which establishes the methodology how to simplify the model. The engine model should be made up of the mixture of mechanical, electrical, thermodynamic, fluidomechanical and chemical information, however there is no modelling tool that can deal with the engine model totally, nor shared guideline for modelling.
