The use of an inegrated starter-generator system permits 20 % increase in the total fuel ecomomy of an automobile with an internal combustion engine. More advantages such as decrease in engine mass, and increase in power and in generator life due to eliminating belt transmission are discussed. Relative to a general-purpose switched reluctance drive, a switched reluctance motor designed as a starter-generator has differences in its control system and design. There are, for instance, constraints on the battery current. Basic principles for the development and application of automotive switched-reluctance starter-generators are considered, along with an overall design strategy. The use of a DC/DC converter to increase the supply voltage is considered. The influence of changes in the design and control conditions on the starter-generator characteristics is analyzed. Compatibility of the starter and generator of a switched reluctance machine is ensured.
