This paper presents studies of a novel operating mode for switched reluctance drives. This mode was applied to a high power density drive (Pmax = 40 kW, Mmax = 320 Nm) for hybrid electric vehicles. The peak power at higher speeds could be increased at this analyzed drive system by factor 2 by implementing this new control strategy without modifications of conventional hardware. Consequently, power and torque densities of switched reluctance drives become comparable to permanent-magnet drives without the typical drawbacks at field weakening of permanent-magnet machines. Experimental studies and results of this we-called 'Boost-Mode' are in the focus of this paper. Control rules are implemented for a stable dynamic and steady-state operation in boost-mode.
