A dynamic simulation tool for fuel cell systems - 'FCSystemSim' - is described and proposed open standard for fuel cell system simulation in academia, industry and public policy research. This new fuel cell system (FCS) simulation tool is fundamentally based and follows a causal ('forwardlooking') simulation approach so that the simulation methodology is both mathematically and physically defensible. FCSystemSim enables the simulation and analysis of all of the major FCS design options and, during the period of 1998 - 2003, 13 different FCS designs have been analyzed within this simulation structure. The primary attributes of this new simulation tool are: The real dynamic interactions between a fuel cell system and an electric load are explicitly recognized - by providing for an explicit voltage feedback loop at the highest (system) level of the tool. The structure of the tool strictly follows the physical system and component configuration - so that every simulation block can be assigned to a single item of hardware or control software in an actual FCS. The control components are strictly separated from the physical component models - allowing this simulation tool to be applied for hardware-in-the-loop, rapid prototyping, and co-simulation applications. It is proposed that an 'FCSystemSim Working Group' be established amongst academic, industrial and public policy researchers to maintain and update FCSystemSim as a publicly available simulation tool for the analysis of FCSs, and as the basis for a standard structure to implement HiL (Hardware-in-Loop) and RP (Rapid Prototyping) of fuel cell systems.
