Technical progress with the advanced battery systems Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium-Ion (Li- Ion) is regarded essential for the future of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV). Power performance and energy efficiency are crucial for the fuel saving potential of these vehicles. Cost and life endurance are the key issues for their economical and ecological aspects. Hybrid Electric Vehicles of the next generation will predominantly use Nickel Metal Hydride as the energy storage system. Its maturity and relatively easy system imtegration into both passenger cars, heavy duty commercial applications provides a robust, reliable approach to modern hybrid technology. Lithium-Ion with the potential of 40 % weight an volume reduction is an interesting alternative to be developed to maturity over the coming years.
