In today's world, light functions in the exterior and interior of a vehicle no longer just meet strongly technically oriented assessment criteria such as brightness, non-glare, or less casting of shadows. Thus, a vehicle's light system must not merely meet the requirement of 'lighting the area,' but also cover the most conceivable usage situations possible. In addition, it must provide ambience and support the design - similar to the lighting of a building in architecture. Unique selling and a positive perception of the lighting features make a convincing argument that DaimlerChrysler's trucks are premium brands. Thus, pure technology like LEDs or fiber lights does little to achieve this goal. Customers are attracted by functions, not by pure technology. Consequently, new social trends like new forms of interaction between the customer and product have to be considered. The customer has to be attracted by emotions like surprise, pride, enjoyment, self-confidence, etc. The paper is a presentation of the new assessment criteria for the design of vehicle lighting systems. Examples are the 'Follow-me-home' function of passenger cars or the 'Blue starry sky' of a truck. The hidden values of these functions are the pride that owners take in differentiating their vehicles from others. Similar inexpensive light functions that provide an emotional effect for the customer have to be developed for the future. The customer should be provided with emotional added value in the light functions. A technologically focused innovation strategy is not goal-oriented. Because current uniformly designed light innovations will be considered standard equipment by customers in the near future, new intelligent solutions are required that will inspire customers with their functionality according to the assessment criteria presented.
