This paper reflects the application of Xenon HID in head lighting from different perspectives thereby it refers to several relevant investigations. From the light-technical point of view the Xenon HID technology overcomes several drawbacks of the incandescent technology as for instance limited efficiency and life time. Even if Xenon HID is mainly perceived as an image and styling tool today, all closer considerations clearly underpin its benefits to increase the safety for all road users: technical data proving a longer and wider beam without increasing glare; several test series with subjects showing an improved perception of obstacles for the driver without increasing the disability glare for the oncoming road users; surveys leading to nearly 100% consumer satisfaction. With superior bulb luminance, lifetime behaviour comparable to car lifetime and a special spectral power distribution, Xenon HID is the most suitable light source for the latest head lighting trends and future head lighting requirements. Compact optical reflector designs are needed to create space for additional front lighting applications like DRL and various AFS beam patterns. With very long bulb lifetime independent on board net fluctuations Xenon HID is solving upcoming warranty problems on carmakers' side, especially in view of less and less space under the hood. High intensity beams with high contrast and a spectrum that supports human vision during night give extra benefits, especially to the growing group of older road users. The latest step towards mercury-free Xenon HID bulbs, XenEco, dispels even the remaining ecological objections.
