Recently, LEDs have captured a large portion of automobile lighting applications. In nearly all new vehicles, search and functional lighting is implemented with LEDs. This includes instrumentation, control backlighting and ambient light for nighttime use. LEDs are also gaining an increased market share for use in exterior signaling applications. This shows that currently available LEDs can be easily implemented in functional as well as signal lighting applications. In both cases, the mechanical and luminance tolerance requirements for the light source are relatively low. For use in high precision optical projectors and fighting systems, currently available LEDs have reached their limit, however. By means of different application examples, this article describes the requirements for such an LED light source, and how, these requirements can be fulfilled with optimized chip and packaging technologies. Vehicle headlights, projection and head up displays serve as representative applications for high precision optical systems. The following describes the current state of the most commonly used LED technology. The preferred packaging technologies can be partitioned into SMT and radial devices. Radial LEDs (typ. 5 mm and 3 mm Radial LEDs) show a high mechanical tolerance, due to their manufacturing technology.
