In the last years, more and more semiconductor light sources, especially LEDs, are introduced in series cars and their design potential has been demonstrated in a large number of concept cars. Beside the design aspect, today's main motive for the use of LEDs is their long life time and their high efficiency for spectrally narrow emission (e.g. red or yellow) compared to conventional incandescent bulbs. But LEDs still face some cost issues and especially for front lighting systems a clear advantage compared to state-of-the-art High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps is not proven. The authors discuss potential additional advantages of future semiconductor based car lighting systems, but also highlight the challenges which have to be solved. Thereby the paper is focusing mainly on the multifunctional use of semiconductor light sources for adaptive lighting, sensing and communication applications, which can not be addressed with discharge lamps or bulbs. E.g. LEDs can be used as transmitters for car-to-car communication systems due to their large modulation bandwidth as well as for optoelectronic vehicle sensing systems. Additionally, LEDs can be arranged in arrays, allowing the realization of very efficient electronically addressable light distributions.
