Road traffic noise represents a serious environmental issue, and demands for the reduction of vehicle pass-by noise are therefore increasing. Sound sources of vehicle pass-by noise include engine noise, noise from air intake and exhaust systems, and tire noise. Many components are responsible for this noise. For this reason, it is important to identify and analyze the contribution of each noise path. This paper discusses a technique of sound source identification using the inverse matrix method. At the same time, an index of stability of a transfer function matrix that affects the sound source identification accuracy (instability) was used and studied. As a result, it was possible to indicate quantitatively the appropriateness of the location of the observation points that affect the accuracy of sound source identification by means of instability. Actual vehicle tests have confirmed that the method is capable of predicting far-field sound pressure with a high degree of accuracy.
