The mechanical behaviour of a metal V-belt drive is influenced by the bending deformation of the half-pulleys, by the longitudinal elongation and the transverse compression of the belt and by the restoring effect of the centrifugal forces of the pulley elements, which altogether yield a variable penetration depth into the groove. For the common sizes of metal V-belt systems and for large wrap radii, the first effect prevails on the others, while it becomes comparable to them for small radii. Imposing eguilibrium and other geometrical and kinematical conditions of the belt and the half-pulleys, the two-dimensional deflection functions of the fixed and movable plates appear as two extra variables to be determined in comparison with the rubber belt case. The method which is here proposed introduces simple reasonable deflection functions, given by the products of sinusoidal functions of the angular coordinate times parabolic functions of the radius, and applies a variational energy approach for the calculation of the solutions. The results may be considered quite acceptable, in as much as the deflection functions are close to the real conditions. The numerical procedure for findings the solution consists of a series of iterations, running through two nested loops and converging to the correct distributions of the belt tension and penetration. The results permit the calculation of all the operativ characteristics of the belt drive.
