Ultrasonic Testing of Rails was introduced over Indian Railways tracks in 1960s in order to detect possible internal flaws in the tracks. The defects in the rails may be due to manufacturing deficiencies, defects arising during service or a combination of the above two. The defects in rails were also categorized, based on the location of occurrence in the rail length. Among them the defects observed within the fish bolted zone was one of the main concerns. Of late, Flash Butt Welding of rails has replaced fish bolt joints to a great extent in the permanent way. Panels of upto 20 rails of 13 meter length are being made by welding in departmental workshops of Indian Railways, before carrying it to the track site. Panels are again joined by Alumino Thermit Welded Joints. Fish bolt joints are now mainly done at points and crossing only. As each rail is tested ultrasonically at manufactures premise with the help of online Ultrasonic Testing Equipment having multiple probes covering maximum rail cross section, each weld joint is also ultrasonically tested invariably to ensure quality of welds. Joining rails by improper welding may introduce a variety of defects on joints as well as in the heat affected zone. The quality of welds depends to large extent on the careful execution of welding operation. Indian Railways have provided two manuals- one for welding of rails and other for ultrasonic testing of rails and welds. This paper describes the method adopted in the manual for Ultrasonic Testing of Welded Joints of rails by Flash Butt Welding. The method uses pulse echo A-Scan examination method of detecting weld discontinuity.
