The MixedPole motor is a high torque density permanent magnet motor variant without rotor losses. It is a further development of the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) with surface mounted PM poles; the MixedPole motor achieves superior economy by saving nearly half of the PM material used in a PMSM. Any one of the permanent magnet poles in a PMSM has been replaced by a combination of a PM pole with reduced angular extension and a reluctance pole with sparsely laminated (SL) layer, thereof the name MixedPole. The SL layer, being made of standard electrical steel laminations, has a negligible cost. The MixedPole motor is meant for electronic feeding with control of the stator current vector relative to the rotor. Savings in the amount of PM material are not offset by cost increase in the power electronics feeding it. The MixedPole motor has far better possibilities for field weakening than the PMSM, as field weakening neither requires over-sizing the inverter feeding the motor nor increasing the amount of PM material as in a PMSM. The technical and economic advantages of the MixedPole motor make it eminently suitable for ship propulsion and traction.
