Although ceramic balls are used for bearings in the aerospace industries, defects in ceramic material could be dangerous, particularly if such defects are located close to the surface. We propose a non-destructive testing method for silicon nitride balls, based on ultrasonic resonance spectroscopy. From their elastic vibrations, it is possible to characterize the balls. The method presented in this paper allows Rayleigh mode resonance peaks to be determined and their velocity to be deduced. The system can accept balls ranging in diameter from 3 mm to 20 mm. The proposed set up excites spheroidal vibrations in ceramic balls. A high frequency band was chosen to facilitate the analysis of the balls in the cortical zones subjected to severe contact pressures, allowing us, first, to evaluate variations in elasticity and, second, to detect the presence of small defects. Given its capacity for rapid measurement and analysis, our method could be easily integrated in industry, where it would allow 100 % of the ceramic balls produced for ball bearings to be inspected.
