Safety related functions distributed over various embedded systems lead to new challenges for the vehicles manufacturers (OEM). This concerns both, systems engineering and functional safety. The paper presents strategies for a safety design processes from system and vehicle integration point of view. Underlying methods and techniques developed in cooperation by Ford and SystemA Engineering during a pilot scheme are described. Distributed functions are spread about several different subsystems The distributed functions are realized by adding new modules (e.g. forward sensors like radar) and by usage of several existing subsystems acting as sensors, actuators, for plausibility checks, crosschecks, redundancy etc. The functional requirements and the safety requirements, for these subsystems are developed under the scope of their conventional usage (Example: plausibility checks of the steering angle and yaw rate were developed for the ESP functions) and must be adopted to the requirements of the new distributed functions in which they are embedded. In the paper an integrated process is outlined which is in accordance with the particular challenges for the approval of functional safety in multi-node distributed automotive systems: Safety Plan, Risk Assessment & Hazard Analysis, Safety Requirements Allocation and V&V Plan (FTA - Fault Tree Analysis, SRS - Safety Requirements Specification, Safety Verification & Validation Plan, Safety Analysis of Involved Subsystems, Safety Verification & Validation), Safety Case. When the different functions of the systems are integrated into the vehicle, they are under influence of operational conditions and environmental conditions of the vehicle.
