EMC has become an important issue of electrical engineering in automotive industry. Testing standards and regulations imposed by governments and other agencies have forced companies to pay close attention to the electromagnetic properties of their products. To reach electromagnetic compatibility, it is important to consider EMC in an early stage of design. That is, try to prevent a noise from occurring by optimizing crucial designable parameters. To allow more professional design, motors are driven commonly in PWM mode in automotive applications. These applications produce higher EMI level for their fast-on and fast-off switching elements. This paper investigates an optimized configuration for designable parameters in these applications to pass EMC regulations. Price factor is taken into consideration. Therefore, the authors discuss mostly the impact of wiring configuration and components values. Simulations and experiments have been carried out on a sunroof system to assess the impact of designable parameters. The results suggest that correct selection of designable parameters can be a preventative method for EMC issue. The good agreement between the simulation and validation gave confidence in the generation of design rules The most common design rules for future is grounding the motor to the chassis and grounding the car battery to the chassis, keeping the motor cable as short as possible.
