Normally, immunity testing of vehicles is done with an external antenna illuminating the vehicle with a field strength in the order of 100 V/m. However, handheld transmitters like mobile phones can be placed very close to vehicle electronics and could therefore possibly be an even worse threat. By using computer simulations the authors can investigate if the external applied electric field amplitude is high enough to cover even the potential risk of a mobile phone inside the vehicle. In this paper they show that the induced currents in a cable caused by a GSM mobile phone with a power of 2 W can be higher than the currents due to an incident plane wave with an amplitude of 100 V/m. They also show how persons inside the car affect the induced currents in cables. An incident plane wave with an amplitude of 100 V/m gives a maximum induced current in a cable placed inside the car of about 22 (measured 27) dBmA. If the cable is placed over a ground plane instead and excited by a dipole (a radiating power of 2 W) the maximum induced current is approximately 12 (measured 7) dB higher. This indicates that an external antenna transmitting at 900 MHz with an amplitude of 100 V/m does not represent a worst-case. A mobile phone close to a cable might give a higher induced current. Comparing the induced currents in a cable over a ground plane and inside a car, respectively, shows that it is much higher in the cable over a ground plane.
