Characteristics of VW Touareg car axles as intricate weldments (composed of S355 J2G3 steel) from cold-drawn bent thin-walled tubes and stampings (composed of S355 MC steel) from thin sheets, parent metals of weldments and welding consumable are analysed. The chemical composition and the mechanical properties (yield strength, tensile strength and ductility) are given. As weld material 1,2 mm diameter G3Si1 type welding wire (STN EN 440) was used. The welding has been carried out in the protective atmosphere of AR + CO2 active gas mixture (STN EN 439). 35 KUKA robots for MAG welding and plasma arc cutting, manual locating and tack welding jigs, tack welding stations and two-post positioners of weldments, safety at workplaces, accessibility of welding torch to weld edges, monitoring of welding process and inspection of weld quality - visual inspection and metallographic examination are outlined. Solution of problems with strains and spatter minimisation were described.
