The lightweight construction within the whole automotive industry gains more and more in importance because of requirements on production technology, energy policy and economic efficiency. In this connection, component parts are in the main focus because - in view of their mass - they can be manufactured in an optimized way. The trend towards lightweight construction in vehicle manufacturing has resulted in an increased use of hollow shafts in vehicle gear boxes. Concerning the development of these gear box systems, questions of lightweight construction play an important role. Thereby - among other things - the following approaches are followed: - magnesium chassis, - shape-optimized components (toothed wheels, synchronizing discs), - embossing parts of sheet metal. In order to maintain their competitiveness, producers have to continually find ways to reduce their costs and improve the quality of their products. This paper focuses on near-net-shape and net-shape forming of rotation-symmetrical workpieces by incremental rolling processes. Two methods, cross rolling and spin extrusion, which can be used in combination or individually are described. In addition, other approaches of experimental methods for determination of local forming parameters and different simulation methods are included. The presented rolling technologies provide new opportunities to design effective and compact manufacturing sequences and simultaneously improve the quality of the manufactured parts.
