Hydrogen storage in solids is, in the medium and long term, considered to be one of the most promising and challenging methods for the realization of hydrogen storage systems in fuel cell-driven mobile applications. Recent advances have given rise to the hope that the targets defined for 2010 or even 2015 could be reached, provided that the progress made in the different areas can be continued. A particular challenge is the combination of targeted storage capacities, thermodynamic properties, and hydrogen exchange kinetics of storage materials, thus opening up a multi-faceted research field that makes the use of a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach mandatory. Recent developments have shown that a nanotechnological approach may be very effective in this field, because it combines physics, chemistry, and engineering science and closely looks at the microstructure of materials, thus giving clues for a tailor-made development by optimizing the bonding environment for molecular or atomic hydrogen.
