After having introduced the Honda fuel cell technologies, the authors will analyse the generic content of fuel cells focussing on the Honda fuel cell stacks. From this information they will investigate recycling technologies ensuring recovery of most of the valuable materials while having least treatment costs. Based on the currently available recycling techniques they will give background information why they consider their preferred option. Honda-s first steps in fuel cell cars are dated from 1999 with two prototype cars, one based on hydrogen fuel, one with a methanol reformer. During the last years they developed their own powerful fuel cell stack allowing to supply 86 kW out of which 80 kW can be used by the electrical motor. Energy conversion efficiency could enhance the driving range to 430 km. The bid advantage of this new fuel cell stack is its capacity to operate at temperatures as low as -20 deg C. But what about the recycling of the fuel cell? The Honda fuel cell contains a lot of precious metals present as catalyst for the H2 ionisation and for the consequent binding with O2. These metals make it worthwile to remove the fuel cell stack from the car as part of the 'depollution' process (as it happens with the catalyser). Only in this case at least the precious metals can be recovered economically while using the energy from the plastics, while still other options for reuse remain feasible.
