A design concept for a Virtually Variable Displacement (VVD) Pump/Motor that replaces traditional pump/motor porting with high-speed valves has been investigated. This concept uses two 2-position valves for each cylinder. Appropriately timed control of these valves regulates flow into and out of each cylinder volume. With this valving arrangement, a standard fixed displacement pump or motor could potentially be transformed into a fully functional virtually variable displacement pump/motor. The ability to make such a transformation would be immensely valuable in mobile applications. By replacing bulky, mechanically complex variable displacement pump/motors with VVD units, a significant amount of weight and space might be saved. Such significant streamlining of variable displacement hydraulic pump/motors could be the key to making fluid power more attractive for lighter duty mobile applications. The results of the study indicate that the concept is feasible, utilizing recent advances in high-speed valve technology.
