We present the development of a semi-active bushing using magnetorheological fluid for controlling structure borne noise in automobiles. Bushings are used in vehicle suspensions wherever the suspension meets the chassis of the automobile. Similar to the trade-off found in a passive suspension, bushings compromise between reducing vibration transmission and handling performance. We report our initial experimental results showing that magnetorheological fluid can affect the vibration transfer characteristics of our modified bushing. Our experiments show that with our current design the vibration characteristics are only changed in a narrow frequency range. Although these results are not as expected, they do show that MRF under the influence of a magnetic field can alter the vibration transfer characteristics of our bushing. In general, over our tested frequency range, the semi-active bushing's vibration transmission was the same whether or not a magnetic field was present. The only variation we did record was in a narrow frequency range between 69 Hz to 71 Hz. In this frequency range, the bushing gave an average transmission of 1.268. When we applied the magnetic field, the transmission was reduced to an average value of 1.139. In this frequency range we observed a 10 % reduction in the transmission of vibration when a magnetic field was applied to the bushings. Future considerations and improvements for
