In order to meet the increasing demand for onboard electrical power supply in future vehicle generations, the automotive company Webasto AG develops an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) based on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology. Hydrogen generation (fuel processing) is based on catalytic partial oxidation (CPOX) as reforming technology which accomplishes a very simple APU system setup. The developed fuel processor was operated with commercial diesel containing 8 ppm sulphur at a power range from 3 to 15 kWth and air-fuel-ratios from 0,3 to 1,8. Proper diesel-air-mixture was conceived by a vaporizer-catalyst unit, partially derived from Webasto mass produced car heater technology. Stable vaporization, free of autoignition was demonstrated for up to 50 hs of continuous operation.
