Silver-metallic is the most popular color among automotive colors in Japan and the share of this color has been increasing. The most important design of silver-metallic is 'flip-flop', well known as enhancing 'three-dimensional feeling of bodies'. Flip-flop is defined as 'a feeling of brightness apparently changing in response to angle' and mechanism of flip-flop is explained as follows. If a coated panel shone on by the sun is seen from point A, it looks bright because of large reflectance-light intensity. However, if the panel is seen from points B or C, it looks dark because the reflectance-light intensity of points B and C is smaller than that of point A. Therefore the difference in reflectance-light intensity in response to angle creates flip-flop. Thus, in order to improve flip-flop regular-reflectance-light intensity needs to be enlarged. Basecoat-aluminum-flake orientation-angle has been decreased to improve flip-flop of topcoats. Key technologies applied to the above are as follows: - Polymer viscosity of the basecoat is reduced to flatten the basecoat particles when being applied onto primers, - Microgel is added to the basecoat to prevent clearcoat penetration into the basecoat layer, caused by the polymer-viscosity reduction, resulting in aluminum-flake-orientation deterioration.
