The purpose of this study is to clarify the influence of lubricating conditions, such as temperature and amount of oil supplied, on the tooth surface strength of carburized gears. Experiments were carried out to measure the tooth surface strength and the tooth surface temperature during operation by changing the lubricating conditions. The results obtained were discussed on the basis of EHL theory. It was found that tooth surface strength under various lubricating conditions was describable using a new parameter PHmean lambda-0.3 which is composed of the Hertzian pressure PHmean and the specific film thickness lambda. An empirical formula that quantitatively expressed changes in the tooth surface strength under the various conditions was obtained. In this study, the absolute viscosity at atmospheric pressure of the oil used for the calculation of the EHL film thickness was estimated at the measured tooth surface temperature. It is important for the calculation to account for the temperature governing the effective viscosity within the gap between the meshing gears. Precise predictions of tooth surface temperature are essential for discussion of tooth surface strength, as the temperature during operation will surely exert a strong influence.
