A new type of automatic transmission has been developed, which has twin input shafts bridged by a differential gear with an electric motor. The motor transfers engine torque from an original input shaft to an additional input shaft during gear shifting. The newly developed active shift transmission has an electric motor built into an automated manual transmission. The 1st input shaft is connected to an engine. Then the 2nd input shaft is also connected to the engine via a differential gear. The output shaft is arranged in common with the 1st and the 2nd gear trains. Gear ratios in the 2nd gear train are set to half the ratios in the 1st gear train. Gears on each input shafts have dog clutches to connect with the respective input shaft, and can be controlled independently by separate actuators. A motor is connected to the 3rd shaft of the differential gear to twist both input shafts in the opposite direction. The principle of the transmission has been proved by the results of simulation and actual running tests. This transmission also has many features useful for a hybrid car. In this paper, the principle of an active shift newly developed shifting algorithm, and the results of the simulation and actual running tests are described.
