In modern passenger vehicles, many electrical actuators are implemented to make driving comfortable and safe. Power distribution and control of the energy flow is realised with power electronic devices and substructures. Therefore, the amount of power electronic substructures and power semiconductor devices has increased during the last years. In view of the high cost of electronic systems in vehicles, an optimisation of the electronics in general, but especially of the cost intensive power electronics seems valuable. This paper introduces an optimised structure of power electronics for comfort systems. Furthermore, optimisation methods for the considered power electronic structures are described and some optimisation results are presented. The optimisation of the power electronic matrix structure is discussed concerning the following issues: - motivation for the optimisation, - system characterisation and optimisation methods, - binary linear programming representation, - genetic algorithms, - mathematical representation of the matrix structure, - operators for the genetic algorithm, - fitness calculation and performance simulation. The advantage of the matrix based structure are the high flexibility and the fact that the matrix structure is able to operate more actuators with a fixed number of power semiconductor devices than a conventional structure does. The matrix structure combined with sophisticated optimisation methods can reduce effort and expenditure for power electronics for comfort functions in passenger vehicles.
