During the IIW Commission XII meeting in San Francisco, 1997, a decision was made, that a Working Group Shipbuilding, should be established as an international forum for technology transfer and information exchange and should become a meeting point for shipbuilders for all type of vessels. The Working Group (WG) has received growing interest and support from European shipyards. The amount of information and collected know-how in the WG Shipbuilding, together with the growing interest of the participants, have given the idea for an International Shipbuilding Seminar on 29 and 30 January, 2003, with the support and co-operation of the Kvaerner Warnow Shipyard in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany. The following topics out of the workprogramm are presented: the quality system model for shipbuilding, the status of robotic welding and cutting in European ship building industry, the use of laser technology in European shipbuilding, welding of aluminum constructions in shipbuilding, and the welder as a strategic resource in ship building. Additionally, a vision is given about the future of European shipbuilding. Demand for new buildings will grow in the future, but supply will remain far greater than demand, prices will continue to decrease, but specification and performance will continue to increase. The ships built today are twice as good as 15 - 20 years ago. The ships will also be safer. Ships will be lighter since strength calculations are more precise and more suitable materials are being used. This would probably make aluminium a much more attractive material and aluminium could replace steel for many purposes. The future of the European shipbuilding industry lies in the area of technologically advanced ships. In order to survive in this particular market, an adapted R&D policy is an important pre-requisite. Shipbuilding in Europe is characterised by 'step by step innovations'. Mergers between shipyards have occurred or are occurring.
