The developed process model as well as the product data model helps German shipbuilding industry to systematically categorise the complex structures of both the processes in shipbuilding projects and the product data handled during the life cycle of a ship. The integration of these models gives transparency of the interaction between processes and tied product data. Thus, when there are changes in one of the fields the impacts on the other field could be appreciated. This integration results in advantages of the cooperative work of companies involved in a shipbuilding project, because the involved parties have a quick access to all the data an documents necessary for their work by using the introduced integrated model. Furthermore, the integrated process-/product data models helps to reduce the complexity of a shipbuilding project and interfaces can be defined exactly. This provides a continuous optimisation of the shipbuilding processes with effects in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the organisation structures as weU as the quality of the product. To gain these advantages under the business environment of a world wide competition of shipbuilding industry for German shipbuilders and suppliers is a question of economic survival. The described approach could help to realise this goal by providing a methodical base to handle the complex structures of processes and product data.
