This paper presents the research on the development of an expert design system for the trim dies in automotive industry. To reduce design time and human errors, The 3-D solid design methodology has developed, that has effective capability for trim die design and design data transfer. And it is embodied in an expert design system on the basis of NT-based Solid Modeler. This system supports the die designer efficiently and systematically by utilizing standard data and design knowledge. The standard data and design knowledge of trim die has been accumulated through interview with design experts of motor company and die manufacturer in Korea. This paper describes the methodology for systematic die design, automatic checking and determination of dimensions and locations of the trimming block using design knowledge, and how to implement the design methodology. The expert design system is being developed on the basis of product data, knowledge engineering, solid modeling, decision-making technology. All trimming block of the designed die are regarded as product data, and system takes the trimming block as the unit of die. It would be used to create a block list and design information automatically and to evade data miscommunications. Parametric design using knowledge base and standard database is introduced for easily deal with various and complicated design knowledge. For implementation, this expert system is programmed by C language and API. And system can be used linked with solid modeller. Using this system, a designer can perform solid design well at the real design and the design time is reduced 70% compare with 2D drafting.
