The usage of various acoustic navigation systems for underwater vehicles to operate autonomously is analyzed. Nautronix Acoustic Subsea Network (NASNet), developed by Nautronix Limited, Fremantle, Australia, is based on a subsea acoustic transmitter referred to as a 'station'. NASNet receivers can calculate an accurate position using signals from three or more stations which in result improves system accuracy by virtue of the 'listen-only' aspect. It is pointed that an acoustic system can provide coherent navigation and telemetry coverage of an entire deep water offshore field with a relatively small and easily manageable number of subsea assets.
