Man-machine interfaces, that can withstand diving depth and exposure to salt water and other harsh environments, play an important role in the advancements of submersible, high-reliability input devices through embedded strain measurement technology. However, conventional input devices can hardly withstand harsh environment. To address the issue, Bokam Engineering Inc. developed a miniature two-axis force sensor that resolved the input force into x, y, and z component vectors. The force-proportional devices utilizing Bokam's strain-measurement technology offered advantages over the conventional joystick such as higher precision, a smaller stay-out zone in the system and water/environmental resistance. The sensor itself provides an analog, linear and proportional signal. Bokam also developed a mechanical design by combining a multi-axis force sensor with a compliant input lever mechanism. The Bokam Gadol series joystick contains a monolithic, solid-steel sensor diaphragm that separates the moving, or input, section of the joystick from the electronic compartment. Bokam input device consists of four main building blocks such as force measurement sensors, signal-conditioning electronics, force sensor-hand interface and a mounting mechanism and/or housing. The standard building blocks allowed low-volume applications to take advantage of higher volume production cost effects.
