This paper has summarized several key subjective results from a larger study to highlight the key differences between air-inflated and foam seat cushions in the context of a field study. Based on these results, it was found that air-inflated cushions offer advantages in comfort, support, and fatigue. The increased adjustability in an air-inflated cushion leads to an improved ability to accommodate diverse populations of drivers. This increased adjustability also carries with it some difficulty, such as increased complexity and making it harder for drivers to get in and out. Even with these weaknesses, air-inflated cushions were preferred over foam cushions by most of the tested drivers, while none of the drivers favored the foam cushion. Drivers rated fatigue on air-inflated seat cushions 14% lower on the air-inflated seat cushion compared to a standard foam seat cushion. This indicates that there are advantages to investigating the benefits of air-inflated seat cushions for commercial driving use. Air-inflated seat cushions naturally offer advantages over foam cushions, and with an improved detail design and increased industry awareness of the benefits of air-inflated seat cushions, they should become a popular alternative to standard foam seats in the near future.
