This paper describes the effects of temperature and hydrodynamics on the CO2 corrosion of two stainless steels in the presence of free acetic acid. The experimental set-up developed in this work was able to evaluate the corrosion behavior of 13Cr and 13Cr5Ni2Mo stainless steels in static conditions with a flow velocity of 1 m s-1 at temperatures of 125, 150 and 175 deg C. Electrochemical tests of impedance and linear polarization resistance have been carried out, as well as mass loss tests and surface analysis. The 13Cr-5Ni-2Mo steel presented better corrosion resistance than the 13Cr steel in all the conditions studied. This has been observed both by electrochemical data and mass loss data. It has been noticed that with the increase of temperature from 125 to 175 deg C, the corrosion rates obtained from mass loss data and electrochemical data have increased for the two steels, both in dynamic and static conditions. At all temperatures and flow conditions the 13Cr-5Ni-2Mo steel has presented considerable low corrosion rates and was therefore demonstrated to be well adapted to the use in these conditions. On the contrary, the 13Cr steel has presented corrosion rates that should prevent its use at temperatures higher than 125 C in dynamic conditions and 150 C in static conditions. The corrosion rates obtained from both mass loss data and electrochemical data have been quite influenced by the flow. Experiments using mixture of CO2/H2S are in progress in our laboratory using the same experimental set-up here described.
