The new 2.2 l 4-cylinder diesel engine, which is the first in-house developed diesel engine for passenger cars from Honda, has been launched into the European market installed in the ACCORD which complies with EURO-IV emission standards. This engine provides the following distinctive features. The combustion system is intensively optimized to meet EURO-IV requirements, combining a 1600 bar Bosch second-generation common rail system with continuously variable swirl control valve, cooled EGR and De-NO(x) catalyst. Architectural features and layout technologies, including a lightweight aluminium cylinder block using a new production process and roller chain system, have significantly reduced engine weight and produced a more compact unit. Advanced combustion technologies in combination with various friction reduction features have provided both high fuel efficiency and high power output, putting it at the top of its class. High precision combustion control and the achievements in improving structural rigidity have attained the remarkable engine quietness comparable to a gasoline engine. This paper is an overview of how this new, highly refined and efficient engine was brought into realization and the core technologies that have contributed to it's successful design.
