At Visteon Deutschland GmbH the electronic automatic temperature control (EATC) development process is characterised by the steps: create the complete system model in Simulink, - model-in-the-loop (simulation only in Simulink), - software-in-the-loop (simulate generated code at PC), - Processor-in-the-loop (simulate generated code on evaluation hardware), - Hardware-in-the-loop (integration into controller hardware), - validation and controller module application. The whole system is built in one Simulink model where it could easily be simulated. This paper focuses on model-in-the-loop simulations. The described model contains a thermal vehicle model, a model of the air conditioning (AC) system and a model of the climate controller. The vehicle model simulates transient temperature and humidity conditions in the passenger compartment of a vehicle, considering setting from the controller, heating ventilation air-conditioning (HVAC) properties, heat fluxes through the vehicle shell and windows, solar load and several further boundary conditions. The complete model is implemented in Matlab/Simulink. The user can choose the vehicle type and other testing conditions interactively via graphical user interface. As shown the described model is a useful tool for designing and pre-calibrating climate controller systems as well as simulating the influence of the controller on the complete vehicle.
