A Manufacturing Information Model based on a special kind of product documentation for companies with a huge product portfolio diversity is proposed in this paper. Challenges and impacts of ineffective constraint management in make-to-order and assemble-to-order environments have been presented and discussed. In order to improve the manufacturing process and order processing tasks, the concept for the Manufacturing Information Model has been introduced. The model is derived from a special methodology of product documentation and integrates product, process, resource, and order information. All information relevant for manufacturing and order processing can be attached to an information structure. The information model consists of three information structures: 1. Product information structure. 2. Resource information structure. 3. Order information structure. Within these structures, constraints relevant for order processing are either documented as attributes of an object or as parameters of relations between objects. The information model supports a holistic view of procurement, production, and sales constraints, thus achieving an advanced cross-linking of organizational units and processes. The resulting information transparency is the prerequisite for the exploitation of potentials for optimization in the order processing of an automobile manufacturer. Benefits are improved order planning and workflow due to constraint-conforming configuration of cars and a decrease in necessary process interventions on the one hand and, on the other, a reduction of cost-intensive made-to-stock cars thanks to the usage of available flexibility for short-term order changes.
