An automated, robotic HVOF process to coat die cast aluminum engine block is now available. In the first step, a handling robot positions the crankcase on a rotary table. Following this, a linear guiding system aligns the rotation axis of the table with the axis of the bore to be coated. A multi-axis robot guides the HVOF torch to the top of the cylinder bore, which is subjected to the maximum wear. The top is then coated perpendicularly, resulting in greater coating thickness. The lower sections are coated by a decreasing spraying angle. Finally, precision grinding or honing provides final coating dimensions with required surface properties. The process is continuously monitored by various controllers to ensure that gas pressures and powder feed rates are regulated for the specific surface and coating type.
