Induction motors and inverters are widely used for traction drive of electric vehicles, e.g. high-speed trains. Recent technical developments enables to enhance the role of electric brake such as pure electric brake to zero speed and economical electrical brake force increase in the high-speed range keeping the same inverter rating output. The aim of the present paper is, therefore, to investigate the ability of this three phase drive to shift from powering to braking without using contactors and realize regenerative brake through pantograph and overhead lines feeding brake energy to loads such as other trains in powering. Considering main difficulties in developing a suitable technique (constantly keeping down the electrical brake force; remaining electric brake feedback signal to the break controller so that the mechanical brake is not added, brake control methods just before standstill), laboratory test as well as running tests were carried out. To increase electric brake output at high-speed range, the insertion rheostat on the d.c. side of the inverter was used to make output rating of the inverter larger. The rheostats are needed for three phases. With this economical method the electric brake force was elevated without increasing the rating output of the inverter. Though the output voltage of the traction motors becomes higher, the same design of the traction motors can be kept as long as insulation class is same. In the case of suburban electric multiple units (e.m.u.), braking output can be increased from 5000kW to 8000kW by inserting rheostat of 3W. When the speed becomes low enough to keep the electric brake without rheostat, it is recommend to short circuit the rheostat by vacuum switches for example for the reason of energy saving by regeneration and loss saving of the rheostat. When capacitors were inserted between the inverter and traction motors in place of rheostats, no loss like rheostat was observed and electric brake output can be increased to more than 6000kW in the former mentioned e.m.u. Synchronous motors with permanent magnet in place of induction motor were tested and seems to make electric brake possible for emergency use. If this technology can be applied it is proposed that also the pneumatic sources can be replaced by electric sources so that the vehicles in future become simpler with less wearable components and less maintenance.
