Ultracap modules with a minimum material consumption and designed for an easy automated production process will enable the manufacturer to reduce the cost of the components in mass production. In addition by the economy of scale further cost reduction can be expected in consequence of significant price reductions of the basic materials with high volumes. These Components possesses the required reliability for automotive applications. With a proper risk management the ultracap modules can be used safely in vehicles. This offers the chance to car manufacturer to launch cars with advanced electrically supported power trains by using this powerful and cost-efficient energy storage system. As the ultracap is a new component in a vehicle people are worried about the reliability of the new storage system. A car should be able to be driven for at least 250 000 km. This means at an average driving speed of 50 Km / h the useful life of the capacitors should exceed 5000 h, a rather small value for passive components. But as the ultracaps will be used for storing recovered energy which will be used afterwards for acceleration the storage System has to be able to allow a multitude of charge and discharge cycles. Lets assume 1 cycle per 1 km, than the ultracap module will be charged and discharged 250 000 times, an impressive hut achievable number as it will be shown later. Also possible environmental risks have to be analyzed before a new component is introduced in a vehicle. Ultracaps consist mainly of aluminum, pure carbon, paper and an organic solvent. Especially this solvent has to be considered in an environmental risk analysis. Proposals for the risk management under different extraneous causes will be discussed in the following.
