It will be shown that a single chip of the characterized thermoelectric generator is able to supply more than 6 mW at a temperature difference of 45 K. The reliability of this technology still needs improvement. The focus will be on packaging of the chip, especially stacking the foils to built a package. The experiments furthermore proved the remarkable power density achieved using the described technology. However, the high thermal conductance of each foil layer enables a considerably thermal flow to take place. This behavior is characterized by the comparable low figure of merit of 1% of this particular construction of a thermoelectric generator. A consequence is that a large heat sink is required. The power density per cubic centimeter is thus much lower than for a conventional thermoelectric generator. The overall package dimensions of sensor systems is crucial for automotive applications. As result, a conventionally fabricated thermoelectric generator with state-of-the-art high ZT materials is suggested for future work.
