The QISHUYAN Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works decided to invest in a new engine and a new locomotive. AVL was contracted to work with them to design and develop this new engine to retain some features of the existing engine but to introduce more advanced technology and improve performance and economy. The paper describes the process of taking key decisions to agree the concept and the detailed steps taken to achieve the end result. The features and components of the engine are described and the results of many of the calculations are shown in tables and figures. On the mechanical side the paper concentrates on the key components such as the cylinder head and injection system. Relating performance the paper describes the predictions for turbocharger performance, especially at altitude and for the extremes of the ambient temperature range. The engine has completed its performance test and, at the time of writing, it is carrying out durability testing.
