As it is quite probable that not only NO(x) but also PM (particulate matters) emission from ships pollute the coastal environment, reduction of PM emission should be on the development agenda for marine engines. Though many studies using automobile diesel engines were carried out, there are only a small number of experimental data of the PM emission from marine engines. Especially PM data measured on a voyage are quite few. The authors have been dealing with on-board PM measurement and improvement of the partial-flow dilution tunnel measuring system for a long time and presented about the on-board PM data (including SOF % in PM) from a 2342 GT experimental ship equipped with a 2-cycle engine at CIMAC 2001. In this paper further research work carried out during the last two years is presented. Regarding the improvement of the system, a new idea about the sampling line was proposed. With the new dilution system, PM data more insensitive to the dilution ratio could be sampled. Applying the improved dilution system, PM emission from four kinds of marine engine i.e. a 4-cycle high-speed one, a 4-cycle medium-speed one, a 4-cycle low-speed one (on board) and a 2-cycle low speed one (on board) were measured burning marine diesel oils. As the result, approximately 0.2% of the fuel was emitted as PM from all kinds of engines. And also for all the engines, PM emission (g/kWh) at low load (for example at lower than 25 % load) was much higher than the normal rating. Furthermore, preparing three kinds of bunker fuel with different percentage of sulphur, PM data from the 4-cycle medium-speed engine was sampled. As the result, PM emission was approximately in proportion to the sulphur content and a relation between PM data and sulphur percentage was derived.
