Following a brief review of underpinning research, this paper presents examples of anti-corrosion nitriding, with subsequent oxidation and inhibitor impregnation, as applied to hydraulic actuator rods and some mass-produced automotive parts. The risks of the formation of an unfavourable nitride(compound/white)-layer structure, characterised by local areas of insufficient thickness of its compact (non-porous) zone, are considered.
