US Patent 6660355 discloses a wear-resistant material, principally designed for use in aircraft brake shoes. Dunlop Aerospace Ltd describes the material as having the potential to be an improvement on discs made from carbon-carbon composites. The new invention improves the wear resistance. Long fibre tows are laid in parallel and then combined by needlepunching so that the same lengths of fibre are drawn through the web to form short cross-connecting fibres. These sheets are corbonized in a furnace. Segments are cut from this fabric and arranged so the continuous filamets run generally radially in the segment. The segments were laid spirally around a central bung to form an annular shape. The assembly was compressed to a predetermined volume. This was then infiltrated with carbon using chemical vapour infiltration to achieve a final density of about 1.3 g.cm-3. This was then removed and further infiltrated until the disc density was more than 1.8 g.cm-3. Next the disc was graphitized by heat treatment at 2400 deg C.
