The marine engine industry in the recreational and commercial boat segments sees itself in a changing environment. The until now dominating 2-stroke engines are currently being challenged by modern 4-stroke engines. With a completely new developed inline 6-cylinder supercharged engine family, Mercury meets numerous and challenging requirements of a 4-stroke engine concept for the marine outboard engine market. In order to achieve both power and torque targets, a naturally aspirated engine with a displacement of 4.0 l to 4.2 l would have been necessary. Engines of this size have to be 8-cylinder engines for good thermodynamic and mechanical properties, which include crankshaft dynamics and vibrational characteristics. This is represented by a 90 deg V8 design. The conflict between engines size, weight and performance requirements could be resolved by a downsizing concept via pressure charging. It was decided to proceed with an inline engine concept with 6 cylinders as the top horsepower model of the new outboard family. In the paper the authors describe 1. crankcase, cylinder head and bedplate, 2. crank train, 3. valve train, 4. lubrication, 5. cooling system, 6. performance development. The following features are outlined: log strike, transmission, steering, engine management, engine weight, acoustics and emissions. The targets for the new engine platform have been achieved. The new outboard powertrain concept with power steering, electronic throttle and shift defines the scale in the modern outboard engine market in terms of effortless and comfortable operation and overall driving performance.
