Metalformers that traditionally specialized in progressive-die work has to recognize that particular family of parts can nowadays be made more efficient in transfer dies. For example, most automotive OEMs have a mandate to build their vehicles with fewer components. Parts are therefore bound to be more complex and some can only be made in a transfer die. The author of the present article wants to give some advices to match press and transfer system properly and to select the best transfer-system options just to optimize a setup for the suitable application. Following factors are considered: bed size and tonnage, sufficient press stroke, press window, front and rear multi directional systems, the right selction of type of end-of-arm tooling and ancillary equipment (rotation, pneumatics), designing the transfer systems total range of motion. Available options from transfer-system providers are described: rotation (servo or pneumatics), automatic transfer-bar park and unpark, multi-passline adjustment, automatic bar-tilt, integrated de-stack feeders, finger part-sensing capabilities, pneumatic valves with individual angle on/off control. A key common denominator that leads to a successful transfer program is the cooperation and communication between the die and transfer sources during the preliminary stages of a new program. The die source must be familiar with the type of automation being used to transfer the parts. If not, the dies may include shortcomings that could hinder optimum run rates. With a coordinated effort, making minor changes at the design stage with regards to finger clearances and minimizing the motion profile, as well as utilizing the ability of the servo system to over-lapping its motion, creates fast and smooth transfers. Efforts that were made in practical field are described and show how a coordinated forward-thinking effort can significantly increase projected run rates.
