This paper presents the first results of a study on the behavior of a damaged large passenger ship in waves. It shows how numerical tools can be applied to derive trends in relation to the time to flood for this type of vessel. Relevant capsize criteria have been applied to long duration motion time series, from which the time to flood was established as a function of sea state. The results suggest that the large passenger ship considered is safe according to the criteria for waves up to 4.5 m significant wave height. In more severe waves the time to flood decreases rapidly from 10 hours to below 1 hour (in sea states of 6.5 m significant wave height and higher). The criteria used for assessing safety are of major importance for determination of the time to flood.
